KEEP CALM

A estas alturas seguramente todos conocéis la frase «Keep Calm and Carry on«, pero ¿sabéis de dónde proviene?. Sus orígenes se remontan a 1939, concretamente al inicio de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Fue diseñada por el gobierno británico para animar a sus ciudadanos que, por aquel entonces, se encontraban bajo la amenaza de una invasión inminente. Sin embargo, el diseño fue poco conocido y jamás llegó a usarse.

El diseño original incluía la corona del rey Jorge VI , con una tipografía sencilla. Para la campaña se realizaron en total tres diseños. Los dos primeros contenían consignas como «Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution will Bring Us Victory» («Tu coraje, tu alegría y tu determinación nos traerá la victoria»), o «Freedom is in Peril» («La libertad está en peligro»). Sin embargo, el lema del tercero de los diseños de la serie era mucho más directo: «Keep Calm and Carry On» («Mantén la calma y sigue hacia delante»).  Por ello, solo se publicaría si Inglaterra era invadida por el ejército alemán.  Puesto que no sucedió, no llego a publicarse. 

By now you probably all know the phrase «Keep Calm and Carry on», but do you know where it comes from?. Its origins date back to 1939, particularly at the beginning of World War II. It was designed by the British government to encourage its citizens who, at that time, were under the threat of invasion. However, the design was little known and never came to be used.

The original design included the crown of King George VI, with a simple typography. For the campaign were performed in all three designs. First and second contained slogans such as «Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution Will Bring Us Victory» , or «Freedom is in Peril» . However, the theme of the third of the designs of the series was much more direct: «Keep Calm and Carry On«. Therefore only be published if England was invaded by the German army. Therefore wasn´t published.

En la actualidad, es uno de los diseños más reproducidos y las reinterpretaciones del mensaje original son infinitas. Es posible encontrar multitud de frases inspiradas en ella que mantienen, todavía hoy la esencia de su diseño inicial.

Probably most of that were destroyed at the end of the War. But about 60 years later a bookseller from east England found a copy in a pile of old books from an auction. The design captivated him from the start and he decided to hang it in his store. However, it was not the only one who fell in love with the simple design and soon he began marketing copies of the sheet, taking advantage of the copyright expired upon completion of 50 years of its creation.

Currently, one of the most played designs and reinterpretation of the original message are endless. You may find many inspirational phrases that still  keep the essence of its initial design.
