DECO: CHESTERFIELD
Esta semana el protagonista del post es el sofá Chesterfield. Sus orígenes datan de mediados del siglo XVIII. Fue entonces cuando el cuarto Vizconde de Chesterfield encargó la realización de un sillón a uno de los ebanistas locales. Las indicaciones fueron claras debe ser «duro y robusto», con los brazos y respaldo a una misma altura para obligar a sentarse con la espalda recta. El conde de Chesterfield, se había percatado de que los sillones habituales no permitían a su personal de servicio mantener la postura erguida y correcta, lo que deslucía la vestimenta de su mayordomo y por ello encargó una butaca especial que respondiese a sus estrictos cánones de estilo de la época.
Lo cierto es que el sillón, que muy pronto apareció en su variante sofá, atravesó las épocas sin pasar de moda. Los diferentes colores y modelos que se fueron sucediendo a lo largo de doscientos años, nunca dejaron de inspirarse en el original asiento inglés, a pesar de haber ido mejorando su comodidad en su adaptación a entornos domésticos y necesidades actuales. El característico tapizado capitoné y sus patas cortas y torneadas son las principales características de esta joya del diseño.
Dos siglos después del primer chesterfield, este sofá sigue identificándose como un icono de buen gusto y estilo clásico. Sin duda, el «chester» está de moda y actualmente, resulta habitual encontrarlo también en ambientes muy alejados de lo clásico, incluso en hogares de estilo nórdico. This week the protagonist of the post is the Chesterfield sofa. Its origins date back to the mid-eighteenth century. It was then that the fourth Viscount commissioned Chesterfield armchair to one of the local cabinetmakers. The indications were clear, it should be «tough and robust», arms and back at the same height to force to sit up straight. The Earl of Chesterfield, had noticed that regular chairs did not allow its service personnel erect and maintain correct posture, which marred the dress of her butler and therefore commissioned a special chair that responds to its strict canons of style of the time.
The truth is that the chair, which soon appeared in its variant couch, went through times without passing fashion. Different colors and models that were happening over two hundred years, never ceased to draw inspiration from the English original seat, despite having been improving convenience in adjusting to home environments and needs. The characteristic tufted upholstery and their short and shapely legs are the main features of this jewel of design.
Two centuries after the first chesterfield, this sofa is still identified as an icon tasteful and classic style.
